The slab is 18 months old, which is relatively new, but that does not automatically exempt it from needing a waterproofing layer or uncoupling membrane if other factors are present.

Assessing the Slab Conditions

The project involves an exterior installation, meaning freeze-thaw conditions, moisture management, and drainage are critical. Before laying any tile, the slab must be evaluated for cracking, proper slope, and the location of existing control and construction joints. These joints must be honored through the tile assembly to prevent the tile from cracking over time.

If a membrane is chosen, it is important to verify that the system is compatible with the intended service conditions and approved for exterior use. The design professional or building owner should coordinate with the tile, membrane, and setting material manufacturers to ensure the selected products work together in this specific environment.

Membrane Requirements and Risks

There is no blanket industry requirement that an exterior concrete slab receive a membrane simply because it is 18 months old. However, a membrane can help manage water if the slab does not have a proper slope away from the structure.

Water allowed to collect behind the tile assembly with no drainage path may become trapped by the membrane, leading to issues. Risers also need specific detailing. Not all membranes are rated for exterior applications, so it is essential to check the manufacturer’s installation instructions for transitions at changes in plane.

Working with the technical teams at the setting material and membrane manufacturers is the safest approach. They can review the project conditions and provide a complete installation system that is appropriate for the specific application. Getting these recommendations in writing helps ensure all components are compatible and approved for the anticipated service conditions. This step provides valuable peace of mind and helps avoid potential performance issues down the road.
