Bomb Shelter Discovered During Basement Renovation In Bristol Home

When a construction and property company were renovating a basement in a client’s Bristol-based home, they stumbled across a piece of history.

Berkeley Place was working on a basement duplex apartment in Clifton when handwriting was found on one of the walls. The notes were recordings of WWII air raids in Bristol, which was a target for bombing due to the presence of Bristol Harbor and The Bristol Airplane Company. There were six major bombing raids on the city, in what has since become known as the ‘Bristol Blitz’.

Cadott schools seek nearly $10 million in referendum

Jan. 14—CADOTT — The Cadott School District will ask voters to support a $9,965,000 referendum in the April election, with the money going toward renovations and an expansion of the high school/middle school building.

Superintendent Jenny Starck said the referendum would be paid off over 20 years. If it passed, that would mean a $3 annual increase on a home valued at $100,000, he said.

The high school/middle school building would get renovations ranging from adding air conditioning to the construction of a new career and technical education center, which would feature an auto lab, he said.

Tips for choosing White Paint Colors

Back in the day when my daughter was in high school, I was talking to her about needing to choose a color for a room makeover I was working on. And she said ‘Are you choosing another shade of white? Our house is nothing but shades of white.’

Tips for choosing White Paint Colors

I frowned a bit and said ‘No it’s definitely not only shades of white… I have color in the house…like…
everywhere. I have a green bench in the living room for example. That is colorful.

And then there is the bathroom– I mean- red toile wallpaper… come on. That is definitely

CHA building without heat to get $100 million renovation

Good afternoon, Chicago.

For seniors living in the Albany Terrace Apartments in Chicago’s South Lawndale neighborhood, the past week inside their building has been cold. A pipe burst and flooded the building’s auditorium and hallways, residents said, and the heat went out.

The Chicago Housing Authority says a $100 million renovation is scheduled for the 50-year-old building in January. But some are disappointed it had to get bad before it got better.

Here’s what else is happening today. And remember, for the latest breaking news in Chicago, visit chicagotribune.com/breaking and sign up to get our alerts on all your devices.

What did people wear in the 1700’s?

Otherwise titles Colonial Clothing 101.

What DID people wear in the 1700’s? Do we even know? The answer is YES! We actually know quite a lot about what our forefolk (forefathers and foremothers) were wearing.

Colonial clothing is interesting. It is fashionable and functional. What’s interesting is that different social status is displayed not in different fashion choices but the quality of the fabric. It gets even more interesting because you might think silk would be an indication of wealth but a fine printed cotton might be worth more.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Colonial clothing is

Cozy Winter Decor – French Country Cottage

January is one of those months that brings chilly winter temperatures outside and a whole lot of cozy touches inside. Cozy winter decor is a definite thing over here. Especially after the holiday decorations are full of so much ambiance- filling the house with warmth after the twinkle lights are packed away is key. While we all enjoy the clean slate a less busy house brings, it can tend to feel quite stark and lackluster. For lack of a better word.

Homeownership comes with a lot of financial responsibility and a never-ending list of home improvement projects.

But for anyone who pays a mortgage, the good news is that you can deduct several home expenses come tax time — especially if you itemize your taxes — or enjoy other tax breaks as a home owner.

Here are the top tax tips for homeowners.

1. Mortgage interest deduction

While you can no longer deduct the cost of homeowners insurance premiums, you can write off what you paid toward mortgage interest — if you’re eligible and you itemize your deductions.
